Research-Experimental Center of the Papageorgiou General Hospital
The research-experimental center of the Papageorgiou General Hospital of Thessaloniki "Papageorgiou" is certified as an approved establishment for the "breeding, supplying and use of lab animals" in accordance with the new national legislation in force (Presidential Decree no. 56/2013, which brings Greek legislation in line with the European Directive 2010/63/EEC).
The unique design of the building and the sound scientific and logistical infrastructure render it a model building, capable of hosting the variety of educational and experimental procedures carried out by the departments and units of the hospital as well as by other members and parties of the scientific community.
The main capabilities of the research-experimental center are:
- Breeding and accommodation of small and large lab animals (regular and/or genetically modified).
- Conducting of experimental surgical operations.
- Post-operative care and hospitalization of lab animals.
- Creation of animal models that simulate features of human diseases.
- Provision of scientific and technical support for the designing and implementation of the scientific protocols.
- Training of young doctors and lifelong education of doctors and other scientists with the use of animal models.
- Training of researchers on issues regarding the proper treatment and wellbeing of animal models.
The animal models unit and the experimental operating room of the center meet all requirements of the legislation on "protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes" (Presidential Decree 56/2013, which brings Greek legislation in line with the European Directive 2010/63/EEC), while an integrated veterinary inspection program (preventive and clinical veterinary) and a periodical animal health program are implemented.
The logistical equipment of the unit complies fully with the requirements set by the European and National legislation as well as the guidelines of international organizations, as for instance the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations - FELASA) and the International Council of Laboratory Animal Science.
The staff of the research-experimental center consists of:
- Bekiari Chrysanthi, PhD Candidate on Anatomy and Histology of the AUTh (Responsible veterinarian)
- Tegos Ioannis (Animal caretaker)
By decision of the Administrative Board of the hospital and with the certification by the competent auditing authorities of the Region of Central Macedonia, a Monitoring and Opinion Granting Committee for the Wellbeing of animals and a Committee for the Evaluation of Protocols have been formed and meet at its establishments. The existence of these two committees significantly simplifies the work of researchers since their basic role is the provision of advisory scientific support for the formulation of scientific protocols, while the Committee for the Evaluation of Protocol has the final advisory role for the approval of the relevant protocol.
